Leanin In

Cheeeers to the freakin weekend! As much as I love working, I also really love having nothing on my calendar. I've been through many phases of what I'll call 'my mood about meetings'. Before the pandemic, I would get energized for in person meetings - presenting to a room full of people has always been my favorite part of my job. Switching to video calls makes me feel a bit more performative at first, like 'lights, camera, action'. However I personally am quite comfortable on video and I'm realizing more of the pros of the 'virtual first' norms that are being established. Life working in high tech before the pandemic required a major amount of your time and energy if you wanted to be a high performing employee. The fact that I had elite status at multiple airlines and with numerous hotels by the age of 24 is indicative of the demand. I'm not complaining! Having the opportunity to travel for business changed my life and I loved it for several years. I'm grateful I had all that adventure and experience in my 20s so that now I can focus more deeply on my community and things that fill me up when I have privacy and free time. Yesterday the San Diego County Health Department organized a Menstrual Equality Roundtable - I was in attendance representing our Encinitas chapter of PERIOD.org. There were about 30 extremely enthusiastic, passionate and impressive women on the line. It was one of the most productive meetings I've been a part of in my career. The virtual networking that took place in that Zoom chat is something to publish data on! This is a cause I am just getting involved in and so far I'm really excited about the women I will get to engage with. The other day I started reading Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg's book which I am ashamed to say this is my first time reading it. My YouTube algorithm recommended a talk she gave at Standford while I was in the bath the other night and I'm a fool for not having her on my role model vision board before! Menstrual and workplace equality for all! Tomorrow I'm thinking about taking a thirst trap photo in a hot pink bikini to go with a '2 months no drinking and I feel amazing' humble brag update post on IG. We'll see. Still booze free! xoxo maddymo
